On September 30, 2009, an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred offshore Sumatra, Indonesia, and affected the city of Padang severely. This earthquake did not trigger a tsunami but it once more made clear how prone to disasters this region is and underlined the necessity of a comprehensive disaster risk management.

Only 19 months after the disastrous Tsunami in December 2004, parts of Indonesia were now struck by another destructive event. At Monday, July 17th, 08:19 UTC, an earthquake occurred south of Java with a magnitude of 7.7 Mw.

On February 22, 2006, the first Meeting of the NaDiNe tsunami experts group took place at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen. Participants were scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the German Aerospace Center, GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ), and the GKSS Research Center Geesthacht.
