Storms, storm surges, and storm waves represent serious forces of nature which may have an inpact on human living in coastal regions and may influence safety both at sea and in coastal areas strongly. In 2005, the hurricane Katrina showed impressively which vast damages storms may cause in coastal areas. For Germany, storms and storm surges pose a significant threat as it showed during the storm tide of Hamburg in 1962, too.
Representants of the GKSS Research Center and DLR form a NaDiNe expert group on the topic of storms and storm surges in order to bundle their expertise and to exchange state-of-the-art knowledge in their scientific fields. The team consists of specialists from different disciplines like climate and ocean wave modelling, SAR oceanography, or satellite based crisis information.
In this section you can get more information about projects and activities within the Helmholtz Association regarding the topic "storms and storm surges" as well as a selection of useful background information about this natural hazard, compiled by our experts. In this context, the regional focus lies on the coastal areas of Germany, the North Atlantic, and the North Sea.
