Oil spill disaster after the loss of the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" in the Gulf of Mexico

On April 21, 2010 a momentous explosion occured on the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" located in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 km off the coast of Louisiana, USA. The oil rig caught fire and 11 workers were missing after the incident and are believed to be dead. On the following day the oil rig sank to the seafloor about 1500 m below the surface and approximately 400 m northwest of the well. An estimation of up to 800.000 litres of oil are leaking from three places of the well and threaten the marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico, the ecologically sensitive Mississippi delta as well as the coast of Luisiana, USA.   More...


Oil spill in the Kerch Strait between Ukraine and Russia

A storm on Sunday, 11 November, broke a small Russian oil tanker, the Volgoneft-139, in half spilling at least 1,300 tonnes of fuel oil in the Kerch strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The same storm sank at least four freighters, three carrying sulphur and one with a cargo of scrap metal. Oil Spill at the Coast of Lebanon

In the course of the conflict in the Middle East, the oil-fuelled power plant of Jieh, located directly on the coastline approximately 30 km south of Beirut was hit by bombs on July 13 and 15, 2006. Part of the storage tanks caught fire and were burning for several days. A large part of the fuel was spilled into the Mediterranean Sea as a result of the blast.   More...

On March 20, 2006, the members of the NaDiNe expert group working on the topic of oil spills gathered at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven for their first meeting. Participants were scientists from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), and the GKSS Research Center Geesthacht.   More...
