NaDiNe is the Natural Disasters Networking Platform of the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The mission of the platform is:

  • Bundling and linking the existing scientific expertise within the two Centers in order to support actors in disaster management

  • Provision of data, models and scientific information products to scientists, policy makers, authorities and relief organisations for applications in disaster prevention and mitigation

Flood in Romania

End of June 2010, heavy rainfalls unleashed floods in northern and eastern Romania. Numerous people were reported dead and hundreds had to be evacuated from their homes. Floods on the River Oder (German-Polish Border)

During the middle of May, a low-pressure area over Ukraine lead to a very intense rainfall in southern Poland. Between May 16, 2010 and May 18, 2010 a rainfall amount of 300 l/m² was registered in the catchment area of the Oder (Southern Poland and Czech Republic). Oil spill disaster after the loss of the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" in the Gulf of Mexico

On April 21, 2010 a momentous explosion occured on the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" located in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 km off the coast of Louisiana, USA. The oil rig caught fire and 11 workers were missing after the incident and are believed to be dead. On the following day the oil rig sank to the seafloor about 1500 m below the surface and approximately 400 m northwest of the well. An estimation of up to 800.000 litres of oil are leaking from three places of the well and threaten the marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico, the ecologically sensitive Mississippi delta as well as the coast of Luisiana, USA.   More...


Volcanic eruption Iceland on April 15, 2010

The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull has ejected large quantities of ash and sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere during its eruptions on March 21 and April 15, 2010, causing massive disruption to air traffic across Northern Europe since April 16. Scientists from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) are currently evaluating satellite data to investigate the effects of the eruptions on the atmosphere.   More...


Earthquake in the Qinghai province in China on April 14, 2010

On April 14, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 hit the Yushu prefecture in the Qinghai province of China, followed by several aftershocks. Many hundred people were reported dead, injured or missing. Buildings collapsed or were severly damaged. Road network and communication lines were interrupted.   More...


Tsunami Risk Modelling in Indonesia

On September 30, 2009, an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred offshore Sumatra, Indonesia, and affected the city of Padang severely. This earthquake did not trigger a tsunami but it once more made clear how prone to disasters this region is and underlined the necessity of a comprehensive disaster risk management.   More...
