1997 "Oderflut"

In early July, a Vb weather situation leads to extreme precipitation, followed by major flooding in Poland and the Czech Republic. 65 people die in these countries. In mid-July, the flood wave reaches Germany causing a number of levee breaches. The so called "Oderbruch", a sink along the Oder river, is threatened. 6500 people are evacuated from their homes. The floodings last for nearly one month. Exceptional efforts are taken to limit the flood extent. These efforts help to limit the economic damage in Germany to 300 million Euros. Poland and the Czech Republic suffer much greater losses.
