Floods Glossary

runoff, discharge

Runoff: That part of precipitation that appears as streamflow which flows away in brooks and rivers (and underground).
Discharge: Volume of water flowing through a river (or channel) cross-section in unit time. Discharge is measured in terms of a volume of water per unit of time and is stated in cubic meters per second (m³/s). Total discharge is comprised of surface runoff, subsurface interflow, and base runoff from the groundwater. Surface runoff and interflow taken together are called the direct runoff.
