Floods Glossary

extreme flood

An event can be denoted an extreme flood if it is equaled on average once in a hundred years. This provision is based on the load value for the design of a hydraulic structure in Germany. That means a conscious acceptance that greater (i.e. rarer) or extreme stress will result in a complete or at least considerable loss of efficiency. There is no precise definition of an extreme flood.
