About NaDiNe

The destructive power of extreme natural events is causing more and more material damages and losses of life. With the number of natural disasters globally increasing, coordinated disaster management is getting more important. During the past years, several research centers within the Helmholtz Association established extensive expertise in the field of disaster management. Via the Natural Disaster Networking Platform (NaDiNe), this expertise will be provided a larger number of users beyond the realm of scientific facilities.

The major tasks of NaDiNe are:

  • Bundling of scientific expertise
The expertise in natural disasters and hazards existing in the Helmholtz Association will be brougth together by the establishement of cross-center expert groups, focussing on different fields of research. An interdisciplinary exchange amongst scientists is ensured by meetings held regularly, jointly conducted projects and the use of the communication infrastructure provided by NaDiNe.

  • Provision of data, models and scientific information products
Data existing or collected in the Helmholtz Association will be provided and processed by scientific models and procedures to obtain information products for the use in disaster management. The infrastructure needed for this task will be conceptually designed and established, including the provision of interfaces to external information services.

  • Preparation of information for the press and the public
Regarding the topics earthquakes, floods, oil spills, storms and storm surges as well as tsunami, background information will be offered. In case of a catastrophic event, up-to-date information will be edited and evaluated from a scientific point of view for the press and the public.

For the time being, centers actively participating in the NaDiNe project are:

Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) German Aerospace Center (DLR)
GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) GKSS Research Center Geesthacht

Online database for flood damage - HOWAS 21

March 02, 2009
Categories:
Flooding can, also in Germany, cause damages amounting to billions. With the flood loss database, HOWAS 21, scientists from the GFZ, Germany’s national lab for geosciences have compiled a profound data basis from multiple sources for the research of flood damage. These data serve for a better understanding of the occurrence of flood damage and the assessment of the effectiveness of prevention measures.   More...

Hochwasserschadendatenbank HOWAS 21 in Testphase

August 05, 2008
Categories:
More...

NaDiNe provides platform for DISFLOOD information system

December 05, 2006
Categories:
On November 22, 2006, a meeting with experts from the DISFLOOD project and NaDiNe took place at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ). The participants discussed about ways of making results from the project available to the users. As a main result of the meeting, it has been decided that resulting components of a disaster information system developed in DISFLOOD will be provided via the NaDiNe platform.   More...
