NaDiNe provides platform for DISFLOOD information system

On November 22, 2006, a meeting with experts from the DISFLOOD project and NaDiNe took place at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ). The participants discussed about ways of making results from the project available to the users. As a main result of the meeting, it has been decided that resulting components of a disaster information system developed in DISFLOOD will be provided via the NaDiNe platform.

The research topics of the four PhD students in DISFLOOD comprise different perspectives towards large-scale flooding events. Hereby the main foci are on rapid evaluation of satellite images in the case of flooding events, the generation of large-scale flooding scenarios based on discharge data as well as the development of vulnerability indicators for urban (social vulnerability) and rural areas. Expected key results are static and event-specific information products. Rapid damage assessment will take place based on information products deduced from remote sensing and simulation models. First results of the project can be expected for the second half of 2007.

The cooperative project DISFLOOD (Disaster Information System for Large-Scale Flood Events using Earth Observation) was initiated by the Helmholtz-Research Network 'Integrated Earth Observing System' (Helmholtz-EOS) and the United Nations University Bonn, Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). The project continues until end of 2008.
