Floods on the River Oder (German-Polish Border)

During the middle of May, a low-pressure area over Ukraine lead to a very intense rainfall in southern Poland. Between May 16, 2010 and May 18, 2010 a rainfall amount of 300 l/m² was registered in the catchment area of the Oder (Southern Poland and Czech Republic). Oil spill disaster after the loss of the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" in the Gulf of Mexico

On April 21, 2010 a momentous explosion occured on the oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" located in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 km off the coast of Louisiana, USA. The oil rig caught fire and 11 workers were missing after the incident and are believed to be dead. On the following day the oil rig sank to the seafloor about 1500 m below the surface and approximately 400 m northwest of the well. An estimation of up to 800.000 litres of oil are leaking from three places of the well and threaten the marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico, the ecologically sensitive Mississippi delta as well as the coast of Luisiana, USA.   More...

The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull has ejected large quantities of ash and sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere during its eruptions on March 21 and April 15, 2010, causing massive disruption to air traffic across Northern Europe since April 16. Scientists from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) are currently evaluating satellite data to investigate the effects of the eruptions on the atmosphere.   More...

On April 14, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 hit the Yushu prefecture in the Qinghai province of China, followed by several aftershocks. On September 30, 2009, an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred offshore Sumatra, Indonesia, and affected the city of Padang severely. On January 12, 2010 a major earthquake of magnitude 7.0 and a depth of 10 km struck southern Haiti at 21:53 UTC. The epicentre was registred about 10 km deep and 16 km southwest of the capital city Port-au-Prince. The city was hit severely. Earthquakes in Indonesia (Sumatra) on September 30 and October 1, 2009

On September 30, 2009, a severe earthquake took place in the Indian Ocean with a magnitude of 7.9 and several aftershocks. The epicentre was registered about 50 km north-eastern of Padang in a depth of 85 km. On October 1, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 occured about 200 km southeast of Padang. The heavy shocks of both quakes caused the collapse of many buildings and bridges, fires broke out and major parts of the technical infrastructure failed.   More...


Online database for flood damage - HOWAS 21

With the flood loss database, HOWAS 21, scientists from the GFZ, Germany’s national lab for geosciences have compiled a profound data basis from multiple sources for the research of flood damage. Earthquake in China: Satellite image maps for the German Red Cross

On May 12, 2008, the strongest earthquake of China since 1976, occurred 90 km northwest of Chengdu in the Province of Sichuan. Measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, the earthquake was followed by a series of severe after-shocks that struck the whole region. Over 69,000 people died, 374,141 people were injured and 17,469 are still missing (GOV CHN, June 12, 2008). Cyclone Nargis: Disastrous storm surge in Myanmar

On May 2nd, 2008, tropical cyclone 'Nargis' swept over Myanmar and left behind a path of destruction. Wind speeds of more than 200 km/h and a storm surge of up to 3 meters in height destroyed more than 90 percent of housing and large parts of infrastructure in some regions. It is believed that more then 100,000 people could have died and more than a million people have lost their homes in the disaster (16/05/08).   More...

Oil spill in the Kerch Strait between Ukraine and Russia

A storm on Sunday, 11 November, broke a small Russian oil tanker, the Volgoneft-139, in half spilling at least 1,300 tonnes of fuel oil in the Kerch strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The same storm sank at least four freighters, three carrying sulphur and one with a cargo of scrap metal. On the shore near port Kavkaz, the environmental consequences of the heavy oil spill are disastrous.   More...


Cyclone 'Sidr' in Bangladesh: Satellite image maps of affected regions

During the night from Nov 15 and 16, 2007, tropical cyclone 'Sidr' swept over the the southwestern part of Bangladesh, leaving behind a trail of destruction. TerraSAR-X succeeds again in mapping floods in Mexico

In early November, heavy rainfalls lasting for a whole week led to devastating floods in the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas, displacing about one million people and appoximately half of Tabasco's overall population. About 80% of the state of Tabasco's surface (overall area: 25,000 km²) has been temporarily flooded. The region around the city of Villahermosa with its population of approx. 600.000 was hit most by the floods.   More...

In June 2007, heavy and long lasting precipitation caused by an extreme weather situation led to large-area flooding in parts of Great Britain. An extensive cyclone remained over Wales and England for days. Thus, in the counties Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and in the Midlands, the highest preciptiation within a decade was registered at a number of meteorological stations.   More...

In the southeastern part of Africa, during the ongoing rain season, above-average precipitation led to widespread flooding along rivers in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Burundi und Tanzania. Storm "Kyrill" causes severe damages in Europe

During the night thursday to friday, January 18th to 19th, the storm "Kyrill" hit large parts of Germany, causing severe damages. Large parts of Europe were also affected. According to reports of the German Weather Service DWD, in terms of extension, Kyrill was comparable to the storm "Jeanette" which occurred in October 2002. Oil Spill at the Coast of Lebanon

In the course of the conflict in the Middle East, the oil-fuelled power plant of Jieh, located directly on the coastline approximately 30 km south of Beirut was hit by bombs on July 13 and 15, 2006. Part of the storage tanks caught fire and were burning for several days. A large part of the fuel was spilled into the Mediterranean Sea as a result of the blast.   More...

Earthquake in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

After the Tsunami of December, 2004, Indonesia was hit by another severe natural disaster. In the morning of Mai 27, 2006, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 led to heavy destructions in the region of Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java. After a very rainy May and June, heavy rainfall on July 3 and 4, 2005 produced distrastrous floods in NE Bulgaria. The floods of the Danube tributary rivers produced enormous damage to infrastructure, agriculture, industry and houses. Five men lost their lives.
